The Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG) awards, is the first of the real awards season to give a real indication of what’s to come in the Oscar race.

They definitely know how to stretch out a small category into a long show.

So let’s get to the first category. Results below.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role

Javier Bardem, “Being the Ricardos”

Benedict Cumberbatch, “The Power of the Dog”

Andrew Garfield, “Tick, Tick… Boom”

Will Smith, “King Richard” *WINNER

Denzel Washington, “The Tragedy of Macbeth”

VERDICT

Well this didn’t surprise me as the money has been on Will Smith to triumph. A solid career, and well liked, it’s got all the markings of the Fresh Prince winning on the big night.

There are still a lot of people rooting for Cumberbatch, but I just think Power of the Dog, isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, it definitely wasn’t mine.

The rest we won’t mention. They have no chance.

And onto…

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role

Jessica Chastain, “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” *WINNER

Olivia Colman, “The Lost Daughter”

Lady Gaga, “House of Gucci”

Jennifer Hudson, “Respect”

Nicole Kidman, “Being the Ricardos”

VERDICT

Well this category I haven’t been paying much attention to, until now. With three previous Oscar winner’s it does feel like it’s time for a new face to take home Oscar.

It has been 20 years since Kidman won, which seems like a lifetime ago. And with it being a tale of Hollywood’s TV Golden age, it has a decent chance to upset Chastain.

But neither film seems to be wowing the crowds. Always a slim chance Chastain and Kidman could split the vote and Colman could sneak in there. But that’s a verrrrryy long shot.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role

Ben Affleck, “The Tender Bar”

Bradley Cooper, “Licorice Pizza”

Troy Kotsur, “CODA” *WINNER

Jared Leto, “House of Gucci”

Kodi Smit-McPhee, “The Power of the Dog”

VERDICT

Well this came out of left field. All the momentum seems to be with Kodi Smit-McPhee. Only him and winner Kotsur are in the Oscar category, so hard to compare the two.

So it’s whether you think Power of the Dog  will be a big winner overall on the night, then Smit-McPhee is your choice. If not Kotsur may still surprise.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role

Caitríona Balfe, “Belfast”

Cate Blanchett, “Nightmare Alley”

Ariana DeBose, “West Side Story” *WINNER

Kirsten Dunst, “The Power of the Dog”

Ruth Negga, “Passing”

VERDICT

Once again, only two of the nominees is in the Oscar race. And I think if you had a spare house to bet, it would be DeBose. Probably the surest bet of the bunch.

Kirsten Dunst losing could signal a disappointing evening for front runner Power of the Dog.

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture

“Belfast”

“CODA” *WINNER

“Don’t Look Up”

“House of Gucci”

“King Richard”

VERDICT

Not an Oscar category, but show’s that Actor’s are loving CODA. Have to watch that one.

Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture

“Black Widow”

“Dune”

“The Matrix Resurrections”

“No Time to Die” *WINNER

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”

VERDICT

Ok this is just a silly category to have. What’s next? Most convincing background talent for a crowd scene? Please.

So comment below with any thoughts, omissions, etc.
